Flaked Oats Alternate?

BN'ers,

I've got a recipe that I want to brew that calls for a half pound of oat malt, which is the only ingredient I don't have at the moment. I could just omit them from the recipe, but I really do want their textural contribution in the beer. Given the LHBS is 45-50 minutes away and mail ordering it would just be silly for such a small amoutn, does anyone have any suggestions for alternate sources? Is there anything that might be in the local grocery store or health food store? I was thinking about just using steel-cut oats from the store, but they have to be cooked/processed first before I can use them in brewing, correct?

Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Does it call for oat malt or flaked oats? They are two separate ingredients, much the same that flaked barley is not the same as malted barley. For flaked, go ahead and use instant oats, but if it calls for oat malt, you won't get quite the same thing from other oat products. Most LHBS don't carry oat malt (in my experience), but it is available through NB. http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/fawcett-oat-malt.html
