What's the purpose of the smoked malt? I would think that would clash.

Have you tried his version of this recipe? Is it a 5 gallon or 10 gallon batch?
if it's a 5 gallon batch, then this is gonna be REALLY, REALLY, REALLY bitter.
If it's a 10 gallon batch, then the body is going to be small and thin.

I'll formulate it for 5 gallons and cut the bittering hops down to about 120 IBUs (which is STILL Rip-your-face-off bitter).
1.5 lbs of cherries won't even come through. You need a lb per gallon.

5 gallons:

12 lbs American Two-row Pale
1/2 lb Crystal Malt 30L
1 lb CaraPils Malt 1L

60 mins 1.0 oz Columbus pellet 15.4aa
60 mins 1.0 Galena pellet 13.0 aa
20 mins 1.0 Fuggles pellet 4.5 aa
10 mins 1.0 Fuggles pellet 4.5 aa
5 min 1.0 Citra leaf 4.5 aa
Wyeast American Ale (1056)
primary 7 days 5 pounds Cherries
