I made 12 gallons of wort with 20# Durst Pils malt. split it into 2 batches and boiled 6 gals ith N.Z. Motueka (8.6% ) and the other 6 gals. with Rogue Revolution hops (5.4%), both with 8.6 HBU's at the start of a 90 min boil, then 1/2 oz at 30 min., 1/2 oz. at 10 mins. and 1 1/2 oz. at knockout. Both were fermented with White Labs Bock Lager yeast. O.G. 1.052 F.G. 1.010. I took the finished beer to the local homebrew club meeting to get some adjectives to throw at these 2 hops that seem to be pretty under utilized:

Motueka: "earthy, mushroomy, forest floor. "shrimpy !?!" i would say that it is like a phenolic Chinook, really unpleasant and i wouldn't use it again, it may have turned me off to N.Z. hops...i have 6 oz. of Riwaka that i am afraid to use now. Any reviews?

Rogue Revolution; one of 6 strains grown be Rogue: the comments tended to be centered on "American grown noble hops, similar to an American grown Tettnang or maybe similar to Sterling, very subtle.., one commenter said that it was a first place CAP" it's a subtle if non descript hop but i would use it again...

anybody else use these hops and have any input?

p.s. should i call my 1.056 Scottish Ale a 80 Shilling or a 90 Shilling?

I have used Riwika hops before and heres the thing with NZ hops. I would use them in small amounts because they tend to be twice as pungent as american hops. That phenolic rubber smell you get will go away from what I hear. Tasty was brewing a all Citra beer and it came out the same way but I think that he noted that it goes away in a week or so.

How did you end up with rogue hops?

I got the Rogue hops from Brewmasters Warehouse, they have the Revolution and the Independence. They didn't really have any info on them though...haven't tried the Independence yet maybe next weekend...i'll post the results. The Motueka is still pretty plastic-y and it's been over 2 month

p.s. i use Citra all the time and don't find it phenolic at all, more of a papaya/mango character...

I've had a few beers with Nelson Sauvin and they've been nice. Wandering Star brewery is being started by my club president. He does an all NS pale ale that's really really nice. He gave me a few oz of NS to play with and I'm looking forward to it. Thinking American wheat beer fermented with kolsch yeast to continually play on that white wine character.
