In "Can You Brew It: Green Flash IPA" Chuck Silva talks about Carastan 30-37. He says; "British crystal malts are tasty" (approx 22:50 in the podcast).

I'm not a huge fan of the standard crystal malts so I'm going to grab a sack of Carastan, sub it for crystal 40 in the next few brews, and see what happens.

Any thoughts on Carastan 30-37? Are there any other crystal malts I should be considering?

TIA,
Charlie

I will be bottling 5 gallons og the Gordon clone later this week. That recipe used Carastan as well. I ordered it from North Country Maltsters and all I can say so far is that the beer tasted great when I transfered it to the secondary for dry-hoping. I'll let you know what I think once the beer is done.

Carastan will generally give you a bit more toffee notes than American crystal. Should go fine in any English beer. I'd be a little more careful using it in an American beer--just be sure that extra flavor is something you want in there.
