I want to brew the obsidian stout recipe from the jamil show but am a little confused on the black barley malt. Is it black malt or black barley (which I believe is unmalted)? I can't seem to find a black barley malt.

Here's the recipe

Deschutes Obsidian Stout Clone

6 Gal. batch
OG: 1.067
FG: 1.017-1.020
SRM: 48
IBU: ~73

11.9# American Two-Row
1.43# Black Barley malt
1.1# Crystal 80L
0.66# CaraPils
0.66# Light Munich
0.66# Wheat Malt
0.11# Roasted Barley

Welcome-

It would be Black Patent Malt (which IS malted).

Good Luck!

I listened to the podcast last night and the brewer just referred to it as black barley. I was leaning towards the unmalted black barley from his description, but i'll give the black patent a shot.

Black Barley is going to give you harsher, coffee flavors as apposed to black malt. Black malt will give you the color, with more subtle roasted tones.

Usually when to referred to as black barley, it is to specify unmalted black barley.
