can US Goldings be substituted very well for East Kent Goldings? Or is there a remarkable aroma difference? I have not yet used the US Goldings but they have a good price on them compared to the EKG. Or would the Styrian be closer?

I'd think it depends on the style. I've had US Goldings that got a touch of that citrusy flavor - probably due to soil and growing conditions that true EKG doesn't have. What do you want to use it in?

Generally, I'd say go for it, since most beers that EKG goes into will be fine with a touch of citrus. Just know that they will be different. Not bad, just different.

thanks BDawg... I guess I should have stated that I am trying to save some coin.. I need to order some goldings and I see the US is quite a bit cheaper than the EKG... If it turns out a little citrusy that would be ok.... thanks for the input....

US Goldings are fine in things that aren't hop-focussed. They work well in dry stouts, porters, dark milds, etc... If you were doing something more along the lines of a saison (like DuPont) or an ordinary bitter, then I'd go for the UK Goldings from East Kent.

Styrian Goldings actually descend from Fuggles.

I enjoy fuggle as a EKG substitute as well sometimes.

I have a ton of home grown golding (so, I guess they are New Hampshire Golding or something), but have yet to have the opportunity to brew with them. Let me know you're experiences with sub'ing commercial us golding for EKG,
