How do you store your kegs

Sun Mar 16, 2008 4:11 pm

I now have more kegs than kegerator space and beer. How does everyone store 'em? Just kicked one, rinsed w/ HOT water; disassembled; soaked all parts in StarSan; reassembled and is 1/2 full w/ StarSan.

Maybe drain; close and put 2-3 psi on it? That way ready to go for next batch in a month or so?

After they run dry I rinse them and then clean with PBW. I remove the posts and parts and make sure they're clean. Then I reasemble, lubricate the seals, fill with Star San solution, replace the lid and allow it to do it's thing. After a few minutes I push the santizer out with C02, running it through the in side of the keg, pushing the solution through the beer out side. Once the solution is pushed out and it begins to sputter I remove the out line and turn off the C02. I store the keg under a little preasure and stick it on a shelf in the garage marked "clean & sanitized" until I need it again.
It sounds to me like you've got the idea. I just prefere to store them filled with C02 so I'm getting less oxygen contact when I go to rack my beer into the keg.

I basically do the same thing, with one minor difference. Once I'm satisfied that thier properly sanitized, I fill them all the way to the top with water\Sanitizer, and then push the water out with CO2. That way I am assured they have no oxygen in them. I also store with a bit more than 2-3 psi (15-20 psi).

One other thing is, leak check your posts prior to storing. You can probably find leak check solution wherever you buy your CO2 from, or just use some dish soap in water. I find I have to fiddle with my poppets sometimes to get them to seal properly.

I do my kegs the same way. In addition, I keep a keg full of star san in the brewery all the time. This allows me to dispense small amounts for general sanitation purposes. When I need to rack beer to a keg, I use CO2 to push the star san from it's keg into one of my previously cleaned kegs. This way I am always using a freshly sanitized keg and the acidic star san doesn't stay in any one keg for an excessive amount of time.

Nice Bug. I like keeping the StarSan in a keg. I usually keep it in a plastic bucket after I mix it up w/ RO water...lasts as long as need it. I think I'll just start keeping some on tap.

I keep them about 1/2 full with star san, by the time I need to fill up a keg I can use that star san in the fermenter once it has been cleaned.

This is kinda on topic...

I noticed this morning that I had left my Star San in one of my "production" kegs for the past few months. Should I have any concerns about using that keg now? Will the acidity of the Start San do anything to the Stainless Steel keg?
