New Idea for Dry Hopping

I didn't want to post this until I tried it myself, but it works so here goes! I wanted to dry hop 2 kegs of the same beer with 2 different hops. I was worried about dry hopping in the keg because of plugged dip tubes, and not wanting to worry about any hop matter getting sucked up the tube. So, I bought two muslin bags from B3 and put 2oz of pellet hops in each tied them closed with dental floss and then tied the floss to the outside handle on each of the cornys. The floss runs through the main "hatch" and suspends the hop sack about half way down in the keg, AND it actually seals! I primed each keg with DME. I tried the first keg tonight and I have some kick ass IPA dry hopped with Amarillo! AND another keg dry hopped with Cascades! No hop matter or yeast in the first pour, and no, I did not cut the dip tube!

Was the waxy, stringy floss or the plastic, ribbon floss?

Uh... I think it is the plastic ribbon, non-flavored of course. I didn't really do much checking on the floss other than to make sure it wasn't flavored or previously used.

I would guess that fishing line would work for this method too, as long as it's a light test line. I'm gonna have to try that...

Plain old white cotton work just fine for this.

I found that some really fine hop "dust" got through the bags, but then again, my keg got really severely shaken about during a long road trip and multiple settings up of my portabel kegging rig.

Bugeater dry hops in his serving keg all the time and I confirmed the method with him before trying it out.

You gonna take the bag out at any point, or leave it in there till its empty? I found that mine got all grassy and vegetal after a whille and I wish I had pulled the bag, but Bug leaves his in there till the keg blows. Of course, maybe I just need to drink my kegs a lot quicker :D

I have been meaning to try this on my next dry hopped keg. I actually use a SS tea ball. It will work for a couple oz of hops I would guess.

Glad to hear the floss worked, I thought it might.

i dry hop in the keg with nylon stockings. i can fit 3 oz whole hops in one stocking, and the cool thing is it sinks so the last few pints have an insane amount of aroma.
