Moldy Kegerator

Sun Aug 26, 2007 3:34 pm

I use a chest freezer with a johnson controller as my kegerator. I have been using it for a few months now. It's always wet inside from all the condensation. Recently, I've noticed some mold growing inside. Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening? Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me, cause I'm a filthy bastard?

I keep a bucket of damp rid in there, and spray it down with diluted bleach or ammonia + alcohol (window cleaner) once or twice a year. Whenever I notice any liquid in the bottom I mop it up. No mold yet.

Do you open it often for serving from picnic faucets or anything? I find keeping the lid shut makes a big difference. Maybe check for leaks around the collar for anything that can be sealed up better?

I have run into the same issue with my fermentation freezer. I was thinking about trying the damp-rid. North Carolina summers are humid as hell, even keeping the door shut all the time wouldn't help.

I get it from time to time depending on how ofeten it needs to kick on to keep it cool. I just clean it often with windex or any other surface cleaner. If you figure out a good prevention method let me know. What is damp rid?

Yes... I am currently using the picinic taps. I open that damn door all the time. I guess it's time to invest in that tower and faucets.

Collars work well too, and don't get in the way of opening the lid.

We take the chest freezer to the Florida Keys every August (very hot and humid) and always had the same nasty wetness factor you have when we were using picnic faucets. This year we switched to a collar with metal faucets and the water problem pretty much disappeared.

It's pretty ghetto compared to ones that people make for their homes with polished wood and such, but it is functional. The boards are PVC rather than wood and have a higher insulating value than wood. Even when running at 30F there is no sweat, and I didn't need to insulate the backsides of the boards.
