Mini Mash - Mini Brew

I have a recipe for a parial mash beer. I was wondering if I could convert all the ingredients to do an all grain beer with the amount of grain I have for the partial mash. Obviously it would be a much smaller yield of beer which is fine with me. Kinda like a small experimental brew. If this is possible how would I go about converting measurements of the other ingredients and how can I calculate the yield of the brew based on the amount of grains I will be mashing?

As I see it you have 3 choices:

1 - Use a book or online resource like http://www.howtobrew.com and plug into all of the necessary formulas. You will need to remove the extract from the recipe and calculate the potential of the grains you have leftover. You'll also have to note your BU (Bitterness Units) to GU (Gravity Units) ratio and then once you have your grains all set you can adjust hops as necessary.

2 - Use brewing software like Promash or Beersmith. Enter in your recipe as it is and take note of the target S.G. and IBUs, then delete the extract and dial back the target volume until your Gravity and IBUs are back where they were before you deleted the extract.

3 - Post the recipe and I'll do #2 for you (#2 above... I won't take a crap for you :) )

I recommend #2 above (again, not the crap) for a longer term solution, but I'll be happy to help in the meantime. Beersmith is easy and quick to learn, and Promash is also excellent, but more windows and a little more involved. Both have trial versions, and there are other titles out as well. There is a thread with a poll about which ones people use.

Converting All Grain to Extract: or reverse

Grain Given x .75 = Extract

Extract Given ÷ .75 = Grain

Am I confused here? The way I read your post Rockfish, you want to REMOVE the extract and keep the same amount of grain in the recipe, and just brew a smaller volume of beer, right?

Homegrown is right about cenversion, but I thought you were looking to do something else entirely.

That said, if you are looking to do as I thought, the beer will be different unless you have a good amount of base malt in the mash.

Post the recipe if you can...

Speyedr, you have the right idea about what I'm trying to do. I've been messing around with promash to see how to adjust it. Here is the recipe I have:

2.21 lbs Briess Pale Ale Malt
1.5 lbs Crystl Malt
1lb 9oz Munich Malt
1 oz Black Patent Malt

It calls for 3lbs Light DME (this is what I don't want to use)

1.75 oz Golding Hops (60 mins)
0.5 oz Cascade (5 mins)

Wyeast 1332 North West Ale smack pack

It is a 5 gallon recipe.

I'm hoping to just use the grains (leave out the DME) and make a small batch of all grain beer with it. I don't know how water I need pre boil.

Here are the targets: O.G. 1.054; F.G. 1.012; IBU 34; SRM 13

Thanks for the help

you could make beer with that recipe but you ratios would be way out of whack because of your specialty grains.
