Burton Ale Yeast WLP023 Gone Crazy

I brewed a Harpoon IPA clone and pitched a 2l starter of Burton Ale Yeast and it fermented like crazy. It fermented so much that it bubbled right through the airlock in a 6.5 gallon carboy. Has anyone else had this happen with WLP023? This is the first time I've used this. BTW the temp was 66-68 degrees.

Here is a pic

What was the OG of the beer? I did a barleywine with WLP001 and it did the same thing.

It was only 1055 SG. It was suppose to be 1063 but came up short, but that is a different story.

Healthy happy yeast pitched in the right quantities do that, and true top fermenting yeasts like WLP023 are particularly messy. The good thing is it spews out the trub thrown up with the yeast head, the bad thing is you get to clean it up...and clean it up....and clean it up.........(or you can use a blow off tube).

I just let the yeast do it's thing, I often get my yeast from the Ringwood brewery and it makes a heluva mess but it also makes great beer

btw I have some WLP023 on a slant in the fridge, i'm looking forward it soon.

Temp of the room or temp of the fermenter? If it is the room, then the fermenter may have been up around 75F and would certainly go crazy.

That is the temp of the carboy. The closet is probably 64-65. Here in Monterey, our temps are always on the chilly side.

All times are UTC - 8 hours
