Going to K.C. in April, staying downtown, any recommendations for brewpubs?

Most of the places around here believe that Bud, Miller and Coors is all that is needed. Sad.

Grinders is pizza joint with something like 20 taps. They always have some great beers. they are somewhere near 18th and Oak or Vine or something like that. Some of the fancier pizzas sound interesting, but are nasty. Take a cab. The area gets dangerous at night.

I would avoid River Market. There beer is inconsistent.

Power Plant is in Parkville, Gorden the brewer is a good guy. He sometimes makes a dark wheat with Chimey yeast. I think they have 6 taps, all good beer.

Waldo Pizza has a good beer selection, even if it is a little pricey. Great Pizza. Don't miss the Katie Trail Pale Ale.

75th Street kicks ass. They had a big fire earlier this year on their block and suffered smoke damage.They should be back open by the time you get here.

As far as buying bottles of beer, Lukas Liquors on 137 st and State Line can't be beat. I think they are up to 650 to 700 bottles. Here is a link to the beer guys blog http://thebeerdept.blogspot.com/

Go to Barley's Brewhouse, they have 2 locations, decent prices and they carry most of the local breweries beers. I second 75th street though, they are pretty good, but they own barley's Brewhouse. Here is their website.

They list some other pubs and restaurants but really the only one with a great selection is Barley's.

They recently opened a Yardhouse out by the Race Track but I have heard their prices suck and so does their selection, even with 100 taps.

Barley's has near that many taps and a little bit better selection and better prices.

Buddy at the LHBO is from KC, work with him tonight, I'll get you his thoughts.

Later - He agrees with KC-Dave on 75th as a Kickass spot and avoiding River Market. He thinks Power Plant is too far a drive to consider as KC.
Also if you are going to be in Westport check out McCoys.

If Fishemulsion is in downtown, he is probably only 15 to 20 minutes from Power Plant, which by Kansas City standards is close.

McCoy's is a good brewpub and it is located in Westport, which is a nice place for a younger crowd. They have good beer.

If you are staying in the north end of town, out by the airport then get yourself up to O'Malleys in Weston. I haven't been there in a couple of years, but I've heard they are making their own beer now. It is down in an old beer and wine storage cellar. In the building above is a pretty good restaurant, and below they've got sandwiches. It used to be a little secret up there, but I think it has been "discovered" and has probably suffered a little bit in the service department as a result, but last time I was there, the beer was great, the music was great, the food was good and the servers were busy.

Thanks for the information! Since I will be on foot or in a cab and staying downtown, I hope that the 75th street is open as it looks like a reasonable cab ride. It also sounds like Grinders is an option. I don't think I'll be in Westport, so unfortuanelty I'll miss McCoy's. Once again thanks for the advice I really appreciate it.
