Any suggestions for affordable ways to enjoy the city?
Or east bay - I think he is staying at his roommates parents house in Oakland.

Just walking some of the neighborhoods is cool. The Haight is right off Golden Gate park as well, so it's easy to combine the two. Magnolia Brew Pub is in the area as well if he has your taste for good beer.
Tomorrow April 1 is the annual St. Stupid Day parade through the North Beach neighborhood and starts at noon by the Transamerica Pyramid. It'll be a good opportunity to see some of the wacky locals - then grab a couple slices of pizza at Golden Boy and a beer in North Beach.
If he has access to a bike they can ride through the city and across the bridge up to Sausalito or Tiburon and bring the ferry back.

beer rev/the trappist/linden street brewery in oakland. for SF he can hit toronado & magnolia easily, or cruise down mission or valencia street. send him this link for the latter experience:
http://www.bayareacraftbeer.com/beer-guides/mission-craft-beer-food-guide/. in north beach there's la trappe and church key and they're both close to the disgusting tourist trap that is fishermans wharf if he's into that kind of thing.

I know im a bit late with the response but... Rogue and 21st amendment are two more in SF. You hit the nail on the head with Beer Rev, Trappist & Linden.
