Advice: Selling it all and moving the family to Europe

Has anyone picked up, sold it all, and relo'd with a job to Europe? Or for that matter to HI or AK from the mainland?

Plus and minuses?

We rent and I need a change from the daily rut. I've moved from DC Metro to Cali last time I felt like this. Now I'll have a wife and 20 month old in tow. Life is super awesome here, but wanderlust is kicking in.

Thanks,
The Fool.

Well, it's not quite what you're asking about... but I'm packing up and moving to Denver in the next few weeks from NJ. I love it here but familiarity breeds, well, apathy. So time to move on... Good luck bro, moving on ain't staying still.

(seems cheaper to stay on the contiguous 48 these days, btw)

if you already have a job, i'd say go for it. The kid won't have a clue being so young and will pick up on the language. If you're going over for a gov job, then there will be plenty of people to help you when you get there. If you just feel like moving abroad, go to Spain. the weather is nice, the people are nice, the food is good, you only need to learn Spanish and the lifestyle can't be beat. I get the wonderlust every couple of years...old habit from the military...Whatever you decide, just make sure the wife is 100000% on board with the whole decision. Good luck!

My folks moved from the SF bay area to Switzerland when I was 6, spent 2nd-4th grade in Europe before we moved back. It was and has been a huge influence on my life and I think has largely shaped my outlook. Being immersed in a foreign culture for an extended period of time changes the way you think and appreciate your own and others culture, it also teaches you to be more tolerant. If you do move, travel as much as possible!
On the other hand the central coast of CA is some of the most beautiful land in the state!
Good luck with whatever you choose.

No, not escaping the gobmint; I'm in bed them. It makes for some awkward conversations on Monday mornings. I just want to see the world and bring the family with. I prefer the immersion in culture traveling, rather that stop in for a day or 2.

I'm applying for work in Canberra, Australia. Will see where that goes. Belgium and Germany are a long shot right at the moment. Most likely we'll stay in the continental US, but you never know if you don't try to get somewhere else.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Cheers,
The Fool

Three and a half years ago I packed up the family (in the UK) and moved to new Zealand. Best damn thing I ever did.

All times are UTC - 8 hours
