I don't want you to think I am making fun of you who love the game, I just don't get it, and I am trying to understand the phenomenon. You are not really playing a guitar right? Just pushing the buttons in time with the screen, but it's a thrill ride because you are playing alongside animated Slash and there is an animated crowd cheering you or booing you?

Seriously, the guy who came up with this idea is a frickin' genius. Compared to expansive video games of today, I imagine this this took very little to program (essentially the same thing is available for free online). They have cranked out 3 versions and essentially only have to add new songs and change up some graphics for each new version. On top of that they get to sell these plastic guitar joysticks with each game for what it probably a huge mark-up. On top of all of that, each game comes with 7 minutes of hardness. Brilliant!!

You got it. It's just that they did a great job with making it rock-outable. That's basically it.

I am sure it is a blast. It's all over the place. That's why I don't want you to think I am ripping on you for enjoying it. Same thing goes with that dance game. I don't despise humanity because of it like Justin does, but I am fascinated by how popular it is. There are a lot of things I "get". Fantasy Football, Warcraft, Madden, Wine. They make sense to me even if I am not in to them. GH 1-3 and the Dance Game are just out in left field to me. At least with the Dance game you get excercise. Besides, I bet I would suck at Guitar Hero (especially the 7 minutes of hardness) if I played it, and then I would really hate it.

my daughter and i are going through the medium level now. i sneak in a song or two when i get home at midnight just to keep in practice so i have a fighting chance. she still kicks my ass but i'm hangin in there and i get super-mega-cool-dad points. plus, it's letting a new generation hear all the 80's rock that i grew up on. she has even put some of the songs on her ipod.

The concept made me want to put a bullet through my temple because I couldn't handle the cheese...but then I started thinking. As often as I catch myself hammering on an air guitar or smashing on my steering wheel drum set, this game started to make sense.
Who is the brilliant mind who decided to capitalize on the undeniable urge of humans to imediately begin a rockstar simulation at the first sign of a familiar song? This guy's pure genious. I could seriously develop an obsesion with this thing so I'll probably avoid it at all costs.

I've been playing Rock Band with my wife, brother and sister over Thanksgiving. It was a blast! But my brother is 14 and I can't believe that human fingers can move that fast! He schooled me.... The drums are really a nice touch--very much like a real (though smaller) set of drums with a kick pedal and real sticks. Hard to drink a beer whilst playing though...
