Disco, if you run Quicken or Quickbooks, or if you use any ecommerce sites that require Internet Explorer running Windows you will be screwed.

Unless you are a hardcore gamer those are the only two reasons not to switch.

We run 3 pc's and 3 mac's at home... the pc's are the only ones I've ever had problems with. Then again, I'm really friggin' smart.

The oldest program I run is BeerSmith... and it does fine.

VIVA LA PC! Damn you Mac and your clever ad campaign that makes me think my computer is no fun...

On the other hand, once I move I was planning busting out my old Command and Conquer for a little flashback fun... maybe I wont be so lucky then.

My problem with vista is all the forced compatibility issues. My wife just got a new vista laptop and only about half of her old software works. Our printer (an epson) that we got last year for christmas won't work with it (even with the new vista drivers). I can't seem to network my xp machine with it in any way, shape or form. They release software/games exclusively for vista, and it has been proven, with hacks, that this software runs just fine with XP.

If i'm gonna have some of these issues, I may as well have them in a machine that works all the time (a Mac).

Fuck you microsoft Vista. Fuck you in your fucking ass.

Honestly, I get enough practice problem solving in other aspects of my work/life; I don't need it from my friggin' OS. But, the "I-(anything)" thing is gay, I agree.

Okay, I get it. I get the angry-mac-thing. But you're truly wrong. Your "problem solving skills" are put to use in a very different way from the Windows operating system. If you grew up with one, the other will seem VERY foreign, for sure.

Also, I call bullshit on the "too expensive" line. Compare apples to apples and they are not far apart at all. Computer world had a comparison article:

"Bottom line: When you configure low-end and midrange notebooks and desktops, you'll find that except at the very bottom of the heap, Windows machines are roughly comparable in price to Macs. There are fewer Mac models, so if your needs vary from what Apple has decided on, you may find a Windows model that costs less for you. But Apple's choices make a lot of sense for most people, and when you do the point-by-point comparison, Apple is actually a better value for some needs."

I have been using PCs for about 20 years and have also used Macs a few times in that time. I have nothing against Macs, but I'll stick with the PC, as it is what I know. I use Win2k and XP with no problems, but as far as Vista goes, I say fuck it in its big brown asshole. I have bought three computers this year - one for me, one for my wife and one for her father - two of them came with Vista and one with XP. The two with Vista have already been wiped and replaced with XP.

I guess what it comes down to is what you plan on doing with the machine. For a general family computer (word processing, internet, etc.) either one would be just fine (though a Mac probably is easier to use), for audio/video production, a Mac is definitely the best choice, and for business computing (Quickbooks, etc.) a PC would be the better choice.

PCs do work just fine for some of us - even better if you get rid of ALL Microlimp software, which I will do eventually.
