Image Hosting: How To

A lot of new users are looking for a way to put their pictures into posts so I thought I would put this out there as a reference.

There are several free picture hosting sites out there. The one that I see causing people the most problem is the yahoo albums. You CAN NOT directly link to pictures in a yahoo album. That means that you can post the link with the right IMG tags in the forum, but it still won't show a picture because yahoo won't allow it to.

http://www.fotolode.com/ is one free service that will allow direct linking and I see people using in the forums. I don't know to much about it as I don't use it. If anyone wants to write a bit about how to use this particular site I'll edit it in here.

http://www.photobucket.com/ is another free service and is the one I use. I will attempt to give you a pretty good rundown on the different stuff I have figured out on it.

Once you have your account setup you can upload pictures to it from your computer(or phone). It looks like this...
Image
You can also set it to accept multiple uploads at once. Once you have your picture(s) uploaded you will still have the top of the screen as seen above, but you will also have an area that looks like this.
Image
You can now copy and paste the code that is in the IMG area under the picture into your forum post and the picture will be there.

The one other thing I wanted to go over, because it took me forever to figure out how to do, is how to post thumbnails of pictures. The reason for doing this is so you don't have to worry about resizing your pictures. If you just copy and paste your IMG code into the post and you have a large picture it will make it so everyone has to scroll right to read the posts and the is irritating. So doing thumbnails lets you avoid that. Blah Blah Blah fishcakes....
Using the screen above as an example you would want to check the box next to Water lilies. Then you would click on the "Generate HTML and IMG code" button in the lower right of that screenshot. This is sometimes not a button, but part of a dropdown menu at the bottom of the page.
Image
Well I can't find or do a nice screenshot of what stuff looks like after you hit the button. You will see the code that is clearly labeled as thumbnail code. Copy and paste it to the post and it'll work just fine for you. It should look like this...
Code: Select all

There are also free tutorials on photobuckets site.

It will also host animated gifs. You can find lots of these free if you do a google search. They are stuff like this...

Here is the code for those two...
Code: Select all

Something I just had to figure out using photobucket:

If you want to use a pic as an avatar, you have to remove a bunch of "junk" from the thumbnail code that Lufah was talking about.

For example:
Code: Select all

[URL=http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j195/BigChooch1/avitar.jpg][IMG]http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j195/BigChooch1/th_avitar.jpg[/IMG][/URL]

Needs to be changed to:

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j195/BigChooch/th_avitar.jpg

Then copy/ paste into the link window under TBN forum profiles.

Took me awhile to figure this out. Hopefully this info is helpful to someone.

How fast of a internet connection do you have? How large are the pictures you are trying to upload?

Sounds like your connection dropping out a little bit.
