Measuring LME for a recipe without pissing off my wife

This is a pretty retarded question, but I figure I'm not the only person that's come across this problem before and hopefully I can learn from some of your exeriences.

I'm going to brew my first Jamil recipe from BCS on Memorial day and one of the LME additions only calls for 0.7lbs of Munich malt. I want to try and be as exact as I can be on this recipe so I'd like to try and have my measurements be as close to what the recipe calls for as possible.

I'm going to order my ingredients from Northern Brewer and the smallest quaity of Munich malt I can purchase it 3.15lbs.

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for measuring this stuff out? NB sends their extract in plastic milk jug containers. I was thinking I'd heat the stuff up in the microwave for a bit, then put my pyrex measuring cup on my scale, zero it out and then pour the extract in. I could then heat the measuring cup for a bit to loosen the extract up a bit, pour it into the boil and then wash out the measuring cup with boiling wort out the spout of my kettle like I wash out the milk jug extract containers when I use the whole thing.

Anyone have any other ideas for how to do this?

Also, I'm going to have 2.45lbs of Munich malt extract left over after this brew. I was thinking I'd squeeze all the air out of the jug, put some plastic wrap over the opening and put the cap back on. How long can I sit on this stuff before using it up? My next brewday was going to be the Janet's Brown recipe and I would imagine it does not call for any munich malt. I'll be completely out of fermenter and keg space after brewing on Memorial day so it might be a month or 6 weeks before I brew again and can use up the rest of this Munich malt. Is it going to be any good after sitting in my fridge for 2 months?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Matt

I've been making half batches for a while and I run into this every time. I do something similar...Instead of microwaving I submerge the LME container in hot water for ~10min. The rest is like you describe, except I don't worry about heating the pyrex measuring cup before pouring. After pouring the LME into the kettle I'll dip the measuring cup into the hot wort a few times to "rinse" it out.

Yes hot water bath only

microwave = disaster = kitchen banishment

Use a digital kitchen scale - weigh the cup empty - or better yet a medium sized mixing bowel. Note the weight. Now pour the LME slowly in until you hit the 8oz + weight of the container.

pour a coating of vodka into the milk jug, enough to coat the remaining LME

it will provide a sanitized barrier between the LME and the air

Should I store the left over LME in the fridge?

yes, it will slow down the aging (oxidation causing darkening)

You can't track down Munich DME? Still has it's own quirks with measuring out/sticky mess... but it will keep a helluva lot better than LME.

Is the conversion from LME to DME .75LME = DME?
