Late Extract Additions

I was planning on try this on my next batch. Plan is to do a full wort boil with half the extract for 45 mins, turn it off add the other half and stir well, return to boil and add my finishing hops at called schedule. I assume I will get another hot break? If I don't get another hot break before my boil time is up is that a problem? Thanx in advance.

Hot break is not nearly as big an issue with extract as the worst of it was taken care of by the extract company. I say let it go and have a homebrew.

I don't know if I'll get the chance since I have now gone to all grain, but I was thinking about tring to do 15 min boil period with extract by going with Jamils late hop edition theroy and the late extract addition theroy combined.
P.S. If your interested James Spencer did a test with this on one of his episodes of Basic Brewing Radio

Didn't he do a full boil (60 minutes) though and just add the extract late with regular hopping schedule. I remember they liked the late extract better.

Yeah, I'm sorry, I wasn't terribly clear. He did the late extract, but the normal hopping.

With the hops being utilized w/o the presence of hot break and extract, I can imagine that the quality of bitterness changes as well. Not having done it myself, I cannot tell if it would be better or not.

I've heard you can get some grassy flavors if you just boil the hops in plain water so ive tried adding about a third of the extract at the beginning and the rest with about 15 min to go and the beer came out just fine, but now i just add it all at the beggining so i can take gravity readings throughout the boil so i know i am on target and just stir a lot to minimize carmelization.
