Best Southern Hops.

Mon Aug 04, 2008 11:39 am

I'm looking at planting some hops this fall to get things started. Living in Georgia we have a bad Downy Mildew problem, any recommendations from my fellow southern brewers on types better suited for this type of climate? I know Cascades will grow but wasn't sure on other varieties that are humidity/heat tolerant.

I posted a similar question on another forum. This is the answer I got:

>>>

I'm in zone 7 and have Mt. Hood, Fuggle and Cascade.
The Mt. Hood started out great, then slowed down. At this time, the Cascade is, by far, doing the best.

Here's a link for a yahoo group just for growing hops. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Grow-Hops/

That's exactly my situation. My Mt. hoods are thicker, but don't have any flowers. However, my cascades started pretty slowly, but have recently picked up and have a bunch of flowers. My fuggles are pretty weak.
I think I've had about enough beer tonight...Now I need some Whiskey to sober up

Thanks for the info...

I found that same yahoo group and they mentioned cascades and fuggles but I hadn't seen anything on other varieties. I'll keep search

Chinook love the heat and we have your same humidity here in OK, my Chinooks are the best producers - even better than my Cascades
