Stinky Freezer

Tue Jun 03, 2008 7:35 am

I bought an old upright, frost free freezer for putting my fermenters in because of the usual heat here.

I do have a problem though. After I cleaned out the inside of the freezer, and hooked it up to the temp controller. My wife and I noticed that the garage has started to smell like dog shit (literally).

I'm starting to figure I might have to invest in a new freezer come stimulus check time, but I would prefer not to have to do that. Does anyone have any ideas on how to potentially mitigate this smell?

I put a few cheap, cannister style air freshners in the garage this morning, but I have a feeling they're going to cause it to smell like vanilla bean dog shit instead of normal dog shit.

If it is the kind with all the working parts underneath, tip it back and take a look under there. You might have a dead rat or something that needs cleanup.

If it is in the insulation of the box, it might be time for the trash heap. We had some shrimp go bad on one after the power was out and we were not home. Never could get that stink out.

You might try using an enzyme/bacteria based cleaner like SimpleSolution. It literally eats stains and odors. Buy it by the gallon at pet stores. It's expensive, but way cheaper than a new freezer.

I don't notice the smell inside the fridge. I cleaned it extensively on Sunday, and even when I open the door I don't smell anything besides some faint bleach on the inside.

On this particular freezer all the working parts are underneath.

Should I just tip her back and give it a look? Should I unplug the fridge if I tip it back? Furthermore, do I need to let it rest like if I had moved it on its side?

I had planned on brewing this afternoon.

Yes, and Yes. Unplug it before you tip it back, and let it sit quietly in its normal position for a while after you are done.

Oh.... then it probably is an rotting squirrel carcass or some other unholy nastiness lurking in the mechanics underneath. Tip that puppy over and poke it with a sharp stick.

And then box it up and send in to the Rat Pad to be presented to Beevo next Sunday.
