For fermentation? I could be wrong, what?, but that almost sounds like antifermentation drops. What's yall thank?

Update: I had put on a second airlock on because the first one had been spooging away out of the top. I thought the krausen fest was simmering down, but I found more yeast coming out of the second one the next day. Then I lifted the top off the airlock and you could hear this hiss of releasing gas. I decided to leave the top off the airlock and put a loosely wraped small piece of sanitized foil over the top. I'm just gonna let it ride out fermentation like this for the rest of the time I think. Next time- just a foil cover.

Thanks for all the answers. :)

JohnMalt-

Do those work? I see them on sale at B3, but I never tried them. Does it work in the boil, too, or just the primary?

Does fermentation overflow mean that your fermentation temp is too high?

I do 2 liter starters and aerate, but have never come close to an overflow..........

Nah. I'm at a steady 65f for my pale ale. Some fermentations just go bananas and party like mad, other just ferment in a nice polite way. Who knows? I am also fermenting a 6 gallon batch in a 6 gallon carboy, so the beer is close to the opening.

I bought them at B3 and have had success using them in the fermenter. We ferment in Sanke's and I haven't developed a blow-off tube set up for them yet. I have been using them if I brew high gravity, then dilute to 12 or 13 gallons to get more volume. Not enough room for krausen.

I'll give them a try in the kettle too.

You could try making a Burton Union as per the Sept 06 issue of BYO magazine.

That way you catch all the blown off yeast and beer and it drains back to your fermentor, and you get to have a nice batch of top cropped yeast for your next pitch as well.

Me.. I ferment in 30+litre plastic fermentors, so I have around 50% head room.. no issue and just use an airlock.
