Foam Washer and Electric Element

I have a 1500 watt electric element I want to install in my sanke keg. I had a ss coupler welded on in which the element screws into. The element came with a foam washer. Is this all I would need except maybe some plumbers tape? These elements are for a mash tun and sparge tank.

I have an element in my boil kettle and HLT. I have a hole punched in the kettle and on the outside I have a oring and washer and a element box. I am going to have another vessel with one welded on and I am going to use the same sealing method.

I have the same setup for my HLT and boil kettle. that should be all you need. you won't need the teflon tape - electric elements are not NPT (tapered) thread and don't seal at the threads. be sure to cover the electrical connections, I potted mine with a bunch of hot glue which has worked really well.

I plan on buying two metal electric boxes and using jb weld to seal them around the element. What about using silicon sealant around the electrical connections?

You may want to substitute a silcone o ring if your using it on a MT since it will be in contact with wort. http://www.bargainfittings.com/index.ph ... uct_id=106

As 'beltbuckle' replied, no thread sealant should be applied. NPSM threads on the element, that just happen (on purpose) to have the same thread pitch as a 1" NPT(F) fitting. 1"-11-1/2. Have had no issues with the standard washer that comes with the element on my HLT or RIMS circuit.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will get the silicon O rings just to be sure.

shouldn't need any tape. The rubber washer should be good enough
