New to BN stationed in Hawaii

Hey My name is Bob, I'm 28 the AHA membership was a BDay gift to myself. I've been an off and on brewer for a few years I don't think I'll shake it this time which is fine with me. Being in the Navy some times your gone at the drop of a hat and everyone you know leaves with you... it makes it tough to lose batches like that. If your a squid or understand the lingo feel free to hit me up about that topic. I found out about the BN through the DROID APP (that doesn't work for me anymore).

I'm a DIY kind of guy I'm always starting projects some take longer to finish than others like that BBQ grill fuck it I just put charcoal in it no problem. Brew related projects Pffff done and with excess!!! Right now I'm trying to find out how to convert Deep freezer into a Kegerator, I have some temp control questions about that one if anyone knows about that I'm open to any intel on that subject.

I Love beer I really don't care what it is I'll drink it. The more I taste the larger my favorite beer list gets. Right now I'm on a kick where I take Sam Adams Double Bock and mix it (half and half) with Sierra Nevada Torpedo not cheap but it'll put you under good and proper.

Keezer conversion is pretty simple.

Purchase a digital controller

Purchase a 12 guage extension cord, cut the cord off about 4' from the female end and have the male end long enough to reach from your freezer to where you will plug it in.

Throw the probe in the freezer and plug the controller in between the freezer and the wall you are up and running.

If you are not comfortable with electrical work, you can also purchase the Ranco (or Johnson as some prefer) pre-wired.

You can add a collar and taps as well to make it fancy - here is one example:

Welcome! I brewed my first batch 10 years ago while I was in the navy! I was stationed in Everett (and Bremerton in Dry Dock) WA. There was not much in the Pacific North West that interested me until I drove by a homebrew shop. Most of the hops were fairly local and the best I've ever used. I decided to brew an extract Austrailian Light Ale with serrano peppers. Worst decision ever!!! I burnt the shit out of the wort. I had no idea what I was doing. But it was all up from there.

Are you Squadron, Shore Duty, or Ship? How are the prices of Brewing Supplies out there? Do you get Maui Brewing Coconut Porter on Oahu?

Welcome. I just got off Active Duty with the Army myself. You will find a lot of current and former service members on this site. I got my start with home brewing while I was in the military too. Leaving for a few months, or a year, really helps with aging if you are impatient like myself. I recommend brewing a few saisons, belgians and barley wines. That way, when you leave for a stint, they are way better tasting when you get back.

BCMaui thank you for the tips and the links once I saw how the digital controller worked it made a lot of sense. I'm thinking I can pull that off too. I've been to that spot off of Nimitz Mike is a nice guy pretty helpful and informative too.

I'm an MA (know my colleagues are a bunch of back stabbers lol) But I figured if it wasn't for a few cops telling me I was being dumb and to go home instead of putting it on paper then I'm sure I never would have had no chance to be a sailor (we're not all assholes) Enough sappy shit I'm Shore duty right now hitched and in base housing (climate control if you know what I mean) The supply prices are fair they cost about the same as most of the items online some items cheaper some your paying for convenience. I'm looking forward to moving to the lower 48 states so I can save on shipping. Damn shore duty there is no FPO boxes for us. I usually get the get the variety 6pk's they're between $10.50 & $14 depending on where you go on the island. $10.50 for a sixer at the exchange and $11.50 for the variety pack.
