Nice job on the motor/cap/switch housing. Did you vent it? Or do these motors not generate too much heat when running a mill?



Yes! I am far from building a mill, but I did just purchase a 3 car garage, so I wouldn't mind having a diagram for the future.

No venting. I don't think there is much heat, and I'm more worried about grain dust getting into the motor than I am about heat getting out.

Alright ya'll, I've gone and "motorized" my barley crusher. Well, I've done everything, BUT "motorize" it. I've got the cart built, the barley crusher mounted, the motor mounted, and the spider coupler level. Now I just need to wire the damn thing... I know this has been beaten to death, but here's what I have going on: I have the motor from the original post (GE) with a blue, green/yellow, white(grey?) and red wire. I have a capacitor just like everyone else's that came with the GE motor. It has 4 "paddles" (2 pairs) for connectors. My switch is a SPDT toggle with contacts rated 10A at 125VAC, from Radio Shack, center off , with 3 contacts which are very small and are numbered 1, 2, and 3. They are the kind that you slide a connector onto. Lastly, I have a 14 gauge cord with white, green and black wires. HELP! What goes where Thanks.

OK here is what I did. Ground from the motor to the ground of the plug. The blue wire to one side of the capacitor (I believe that it doesn't matter which side) and the other side to the red wire on the motor. The white wire to the final wire of the plug. If you want a switch get a simple one and put it between the plug and the capacitor. If all else fails buy colored wire and follow BC's picture, it should be as easy as paint by numbers. To make it even easier I bought a Molex adapter from a computer supply store and some wire nuts from ACE. Easy cheesy.

Remember!!!! Electricity is dangerous. Always be careful and if you don't know what you are doing have someone do it for you, or at least help.

OK, here's what I'm thinking. My switch is what's causing my concern. I have 4 things needing wiring. I have the plug, which has white, black and green. I have the motor, which has white, blue, red and green/yellow. I have the capacitor, which has 2 pairs of terminals, and I have my SPDT, center off toggle switch which has three terminals labeled 1, 2, and 3. 2 being the "off" position.
I know that the white from the motor goes to the white of the plug. I know that the green/yellow from the motor goes to the green of the plug. NOW HERE'S WHERE I AM UNSURE, DOES THE BLACK WIRE FROM THE CORD GO TO THE CENTER TERMINAL IN THE SWITCH (#2)?
I'm pretty sure that the red wire from the motor goes into one of the terminals on the capacitor and then into either the #1 or #3 terminal on the switch. Does it matter if I go to the capacitor first or the switch first? Also,what I'm wondering is, if I can use both terminals in the pair on the capacitor? Meaning one is where the wire from the motor attaches (in) and the other as an "out" to the switch. I think it just would be easier to crimp the wire into one of those slide-on wire/terminal connectors.
Lastly, the blue wire would go into one of the other terminals in the second pair on the capacitor. Then leave via the other terminal in the same pair to the last terminal on the switch.
Does this sound about right? My main concern is where that black wire from the cord goes to. Thanks all.

The green wire from the cord goes to the green wire on the motor.
The white wire from the cord goes only to the white wire on the motor.
Yes, the black wire from the cord goes to the center of the switch.
Red goes to one side of the capacitor AND one side of the switch.
Blue goes to the other side of the capacitor AND the other side of the switch.
Yes, it is OK to use both terminals in the pair on the capacitor. That's what they're for.

MAKE SURE you have your cord plugged into a GFCI-protected outlet before you test anything. I am not an electrician.
