How do I get rid of that white film on my hoses?

Thu Jan 20, 2011 1:53 pm

I've been using Oxi-Clean to wash my hoses, then a good rinse and my hoses still have a white film. Will PBW eliminate that problem? And is that white film going to contaminate my beer? What's the best way to approach this situation?

Oxi-Clean and PBW are basic solutions, so they both work the same way and PBW likely will not remove the film from the Oxi-Clean. The best way is to use a weak acid like star san to remove the film, followed by a hot water rinse. I wouldn't wory to much about contamination as long as the hoses are cleaned and sanitized properly. The good thing is hoses are cheap and easy to replace.

Depending on if it is a film or the plastic itself, try setting your hoses out in the sun for a few hours. I have "cleaned" up a few hoses myself that way.

I think that AdamandEve or Vanna carries something you can use to get the white film off your hose.

I don't have a hard time with the white film...

...I can never get all the blood off the hoes, though.

The white film is probably mineral deposits left behind after the hoses have dried.

After I soak my hoses in PBW and rinse, I always put them in the sanitizer (Star San) bucket for a quick rinse before hanging them to dry. They dry out much quicker and leave behind no white film.

Yeah, star san will drip out and dry much faster than even just water, which always seems to hang around and leave spots.
