new planted hops help

Sat May 29, 2010 5:41 pm

I planted some rhizomes around the begining of april, we got 2 frosts since then, I dont think the frost has much to do with my problem but it may so here is the deal. I have seen nothing coming up, I have been watering properly. I think maybe one started coming up 2 days ago, but this is my first time at this, so I dont know what I am really looking for. anyway I grew willament, chinook, centennial, cascade, and fuggles. Any ideas on what I should be looking for, or am I just worring about nothing

Hop are tough so they may have survived. If you plant them right they should be growing like weeds. You should have a fairly deep hole that has been de-rocked along with some food for the hop bines. First year plantings always take a while to get growing and they never grow as well as established plants. My first years did not grow well at all, this year they are much better and I suspect next year will be even better.

I guess I will just wait it out, however the instructions that I read were to plant them in a whole about 2 inches deep and the lenth of the rhizome, the ground had already been fertalized cause it is in the vegie garden. Hopefully something will pop out soon. thanks for the information.

I planted mine about 2" deep also, in MN and they have done fine. They were very slow to sprout the first year and maybe got 3 to 4 feet tall with about 12 cones for 6 plants. This year some are already 10ft but most are about 4ft. Relax, don't worry. They kinda look like asparagus coming up at first.
