Anyone understand Electric Motors

Tue Sep 15, 2009 1:39 pm

I've got a garage door opener that was being thrown out and it looks like it would be a good candidate for the power for a mash stirrer. It has a 1/2 hp 120v Capacitor start electric motor. The capacitor is rated at 220V. Being it's a garage door opener it has a circuit board in it that controls on and off. I'm trying to figure out how to apply power to the motor(+capacitor) bypassing the circuit board. I tried connecting AC directly to the red/black leads and it blows the 20 amp breaker on that circuit. Here's the diagram on the motor. How can I do this?

If it is being thrown out I'd check all the wiring with a multimeter. The black is your hot line so none of the other wires should be directly shorted to the black. If any of the wires read a dead short to the black chuck the motor.

The black wire (in standard wiring) is always the line voltage. User your multi meter and make sure the hot side of the AC is connected to the black. The common side of your AC (like if you cut the end off an extension cord) is usually a white wire and can be connected to either the yellow or orange since they look to be tied together.

Is that motor made in China? They don't always follow standard color codes so it is hard to say for sure.

Here is a wiring chart. The color codes don't match your diagram but it might be of some use.

The motor is an AO Smith motor which runs fine. I was able to plug the whole unit in and press this button on the circuit board which makes it spin but being a garage door circuit board, it runs for a minute than quits. Thanks for the input. I'll try to connect and see if sparks fly.

Hoprunner, you the man. works like a champ. Black to black, white to either yellow or orange depending on which way you want it to turn. I wonder what the red wire does? :bnarmy:
