Excellent step-by-step, Kaiser! The pictures are especially helpful. Guess I'll just need to try again until I get it right.

Thanks,

Make sure nothing is obstruction a clean circular motion of the wort (no spoon or racking can should be in there) and it needs to settle for 20-30min.

I have been pretty constistent with my whilpools lately. I even started to push the racking cane all the way down in the beginning. It runs a little cloudy for the fist pint, but clears up after that. You will still get some cold break, but this is actually good since the fermentation needs a little cold break material.

This may be a stupid question, but how do you get your siphon going to get your wort out of the kettle and into the fermentor? I've always poured the wort out of my brewpot (thus bringing a lot of cold break with me). The only time I siphon is when I need to get my beer out of a carboy. I usually just use my mouth and suck away. I'm not worried about it at this stage because the alcohol. However, I'm not sure I want to use my mouth to get the wort out of the kettle. How do you start your siphon?

don't start your siphon by sucking on the hose ever. This just calls for an infection in the beer.

I plug the tip of the sanitized turkey baster, that I use to take gravity samples, into the end of the hose and suck on it. Once the wort flows, but hasn't reached the end yet, I pull the turkey baster tip out and put the hose into the carboy.

That's because you aren't using enough hops.

An Auto-siphon works great too!

Thanks Kaiser. I do know that people have said "no mouth" to start siphons. I've been brewing for quite a few years and have never had a problem. I however would never do it with frest wort so the turkey baster method sounds excellent. Thanks again for the whirlpooling lesson!

I use the water in the hose technique. I fill my siphon hose with some pre-boiled and chilled water, then use it to start my siphon. It works for me.
