It's really a DIPA but HOLY CRAP! If you can get your hands on this try it. IMO every bit as good as Pliny, but not quite as strong on the Columbus, which I like. I'll have to sit down and do a side by side with these two

Avery is no joke as you all know, and this is exceptional.

Um... really? I was pretty disappointed with it. Not near as good as the Maharaja in my opinion. In fact, I might even take plain old Avery IPA over it.

Huh. Here's what I was thinking: The Columbus is there but not over the top (the more I drink Pliny, the more this bugs me). Definitely seriously hoppy, but not out of balance. It has good mid range malt in the finish. In comparing it to Pliny (I know, sacrilege, but it is the standard, no?) it seems to have a bit more malt flavor to it.

Maybe just my palate, but I like it.

Any specific reason for your disappointment, or just not impressed?

I'm headed out to Longmont for Christmas. I may have to swing over to Avery to try that beer. My standard for good IPA's is not Pliny but rather Vinnie's Blind Pig IPA. Much better balanced than Pliny. I've had the Maharaja a few times. It's good, but the Blind Pig is much better.

Well, Maharaja just kind of hits you in the face with hoppy goodness. This was hoppy, but I was expecting it to be more pronounced. Maybe it's just that the piney/resiny hop flavors that make this beer aren't my favorite. I guess to me, nothing about it set itself apart from the myriad of other hoppy beers out there.

Maybe it's better on tap, I only had it out of the bottle.

I agree, but since this checks in at 8.5% and like 95 IBU, I would put it in the double category.
