Thanks Wayne! I think you're right, and this type of collaboration is really fun, informative and extremely helpful.

I propose we take this one step further. We brew our best guesses and then share the results, and the beer, for taste test purposes. We could even send some into the BN for a taste test and see how we all fared, and what we need to change to try and nail this down. Not a competition, but more of a "what worked" taste test.

I'm brewing my recipe in a month, on March 24th. I should be able to send out samples 6 weeks later, week of May 7th. Does anyone want to commit to having this ready to send out by, say May 15th or 31st? I'd like to be able to do side-by-side taste tests, along with the real stuff too, if anyone doesn't mind including one for me, since I can't get it here in PA :(

My "IMHO" recipe is as follows:

1447

Type: All Grain
Date: 3/24/2007
Batch Size: 6.00 gal
Brewer: Rob Schlank
Boil Size: 7.62 gal
Boil Time: 90 min
Brewhouse Efficiency: 65.0

Ingredients:
Amount Item Type % or IBU
6 lbs Munich Malt (9.0 SRM) Grain 40.0 %
6 lbs Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) Grain 40.0 %
1 lbs 4.0 oz Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) Grain 8.3 %
1 lbs 4.0 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain 8.3 %
8.0 oz Debittered Black (575.0 SRM) Grain 3.3 %
28.30 gm Northern Brewer [8.50%] (60 min) Hops 25.1 IBU
28.30 gm Fuggles [3.70%] (60 min) Hops 10.9 IBU
1.00 tsp Seeds of Paradise (Boil 1.0 min) Misc

2 Pkgs Bohemian Lager (Wyeast Labs #2124) [Starter 2 L] Yeast-Lager

Beer Profile:
Est Original Gravity: 1.059 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.017 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 5.6 %
Bitterness: 36.0 IBU Calories: 43 cal/pint
Est Color: 28.3 SRM

Mash Profile:
Name Description Step Temp Step Time
Sacch Rest Add 18.00 qt of water at 168.3 F 155.0 F 60 min
Mash Out Add 9.00 qt of water at 198.8 F 168.0 F 10 min

I'll ferment at 75f as per the Wyeast Website. I'll probably start it at 70f and let it rise naturally, as Jamil says :)

The Final Gravity should be a little lower due to the fermentation temp, but a little higher due to mash temp, so we'll see where it ends up.

If anyone has any comments and sees anything wrong here let me know. I figure I'll finalize and get ingredients in about 2 weeks.

Why did you have to go and throw this challenge down...I will see if I can work it in. It really wasn't something I was looking to brew right away, but damnit, a challenge in the name of brewing is hard to turn down.

I will get back to you and see.

This is the recipe I will probably go with if I do this. It does sound like fun and I know I would drink it. We will see.

Northern Brewer has Debittered Black. I also use that site for their EXCELLENT grain descriptions.

And it's not a Challenge per se, but a collaboration for the clarification of the proper combination to re-create this wonderful libation...

But if it takes a challenge to get you in, then I slap you in the face with my virtual glove, and demand satisfaction sir!

I found it at Northern Brewer too, thanks.

I meant the challenge of replicating this recipe exactly, but I might accept the virtual glove slap just for fun big boy.
