American Pale Recipe

Looking for a good reliable pale ale recipe along the lines of Sierra Nevada or Troegs. Really what I want to do is start with an extract and specialty grain or partial mash base recipe and use a single hop type (say cascade) and split the batch into dry-hopped and not dry hopped. From there maybe change up hops or start blending. Eventually use it as my transition to all-grain.

I suspect I could just dig thru Designing Great Beers or Pro Mash, but thought I throw the idea out here. Also considered doing ALL hopping as late addition.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance for the help.

Tim,

Have a read of this NB post. It is suppossed to be the actual SNPA recipe.

Thanks. I checked it out and it looks like a great starting point. I think I'll aim for a nearly identical grain bill target, but see what 100% Cascade hops does for me, and split the batch for fermentation with !/2 dry hopped and 1/2 not.

Needless to say my objective is two-fold. I want to experiment with APA and IPA recipes and learn about the differing characteristics of different hops.

A friend (and BN listener) in my area makes a very good batch of Jamil's recipe:

http://www.beerdujour.com/Recipes/Jamil ... e_Ale.html

I have not brewed this one (yet) but I've had his and I think it's better than SNPA, hard to go wrong using one from Jamil.

I have a couple of APA recipes that I use and like, one with all-amarillo comes out very good.

Thanks...I do imagine Jamil's recipe is amazing...did the Brewcasters taste your APA on an old episode????? Amarillo Pale Ale maybe? Sounds very familiar...is the recipe partial extract or easily converted?

Thanks LB'ski

No, that was not mine. Maybe someday.

is the recipe partial extract or easily converted?

I have the recipe as partial mash or all-grain, sounds like you want the partial (see below) which is also what I have made and have been getting a lot of positive feedback on; IOW my friends drank it all and want more. I skewed the hop additions to a more "late hop" profile, I think this helped showcase the hop flavor. I will make this as all grain next time since I recently made the jump into that realm. Let me know if you have any questions.
