Tasty, when you formulate a single AIPA recipe, do you have any set parameter for how many IBUs you want out of your bittering hop addition. Any specific percent, or ratio? As an example, if you were brewing a 1.066 AIPA, and assuming a 1:1 BU:GU ratio, how many IBUs from the bittering addition(s)? Thanks.

Not trying to answer for Tasty, but generally if you are brewing an IPA where you want lots of flavor and aroma, I would suggest entering those parameters first, then adjusting your bittering addition as needed to get the IBUs where you want.

I try to get 2/3 of the IBUs in the last 20 minutes of the boil (and post boil if there's a flameout addition). So the answer to your question is I try to limit the 60 minute addition to 1/3 of the total IBU's.

If you are using pellets and have a good way to settle a whirlpool of hops and trub, you can transfer fairly clear beer over. If you are using cones, they can fairly easily be scooped out of the kettle with a strainer.

Or you can use hop bags, which if I recall correctly is how Tasty does it.

He used to, but I believe has since moved to whirlpooling...

That's correct. I no longer use hopsacks in the kettle. I'd go back to them if I didn't get such a good whirlpool cone.
