Oskar Blues Gordon question

im brewing up the cybi clone of this tomorrow and ive hit a snag. recipe calls for 4 OZ of columbus at 10min to give you 40 IBU.
at 14%AA 4 oz of the columbus hops i have give me 56IBU, to get it to 40IBU i must drop it to about a 3 oz addition. Having tasted this beer i feel that the volatile hop oils from this addition are almost as important as the bitterness.
do I cut the bittering addition down 10 IBUS? or possibly take that extra oz of columbus and add it at flameout?
would love some advice

Just my $ 0.02 worth having done a few IPAs is that it is hard to use too much hops at the last 10 minutes of the boil. I normaly tell newbs not to wimp out and go for it.
I recenly did a late addition IPA with 2 oz. of Summit at 20,10 and 1 minutes for 6 ounces total and it came out great. But that is my opinion coming from the soul, other brewers may be stricter and say stick to the IBUs.

However, if you the final beer comes out too bitter or hoppy, let it age for a month or so and you should be good to go.

I would like to see other responses as well, I am always open to new ideas.
Cheers.
Fritz

Funny thing you say that Fritz yesterday I put summit in 2 ounces each at 15 10 5 and 0 min. Hope all turns out well. Just go ahead with the bigger charge of Columbus and you will be fine.

The way I look at it, if you are trying to brew the clone then I would stick with the IBU's of the recipe. That's going to give you a more accurate depiction of the Gordon (probably). But that being said.... I tend to agree with Fritz and NHBrewer. Chuck it in there and I'm sure you'll be happy with the beer. It might not be as close to the real thing, but I'm sure it's gonna be DAMN good.

Actually did two kettles split with the same wort then hopped one with Apollo and the other with Summit. Ended up with two fermenters of each and plan on having them side by side and a blend available for those attending the Belgian fest at Ebenezers in August. Hoping to showcase these new hops. I did bitter with one ounce at the beginning of the boil then blasted the end. Loosely based to be similar to Gordon but only in style.
