Bodacious Brown Ale

The first beer I brewed on my B3 1000 Brew Sculpture that I won from MoreBeer was Bodacious Brown Ale. Now you can brew the recipe as a signature series kit from MoreBeer!

Hi Tasty - The Boacious Brown Ale started out as your Janet's Brown Ale from Brewing Classic Styles, with hop substitutions. JP had to make some substitutions as well.
Here is the recipe:

11 lb 2-Row
1 lb Crystal 40L
.5 lb Pale Chocolate
.5 lb White Wheat
Mash at 154

1.5 oz Cascade ● Mash Hops
.5 oz Galena ● Bittering Hops are boiled for 75 minutes
2 oz Cascade ● Flavoring Hops boiled the last 10 minutes
2 oz Willamette ● Aroma Hops added at flameout
Cal Ale Yeast - ferment at 68 f

Cool. People ought to give that kit a try. I like your changes and thanks for sharing the recipe. Galena is cool but Nugget could make it even more bodacious. Is that another word for drinkability?

JP touched an earlier version of my Janet's Brown Ale when he made it into a kit and called it an American Amber Ale. I didn't even make an American Amber Ale at the time. No touching where you shouldn't be touching JP. I feel dirty. :roll:

The original recipe included Nugget hops and was closer to your Janet's Brown Ale recipe:

11 gallons
OG 1.058
FG 1.014
41 IBU

20 lbs. of American Two-Row (Mash)
2 lbs. of American Crystal 40L (Mash)
1 lbs. of American Wheat (Mash)
1 lbs. of Cara-Pils Dextrine (Mash)
1 lbs. of American Chocolate (Mash)

1.5 oz. (42.5g) of Chinook Mash Hops (6.5%) Alpha adjusted in half for Mash
1 oz. (28.3g) of Nugget (13.5%) boiled for 75 minutes.
2 oz. (56.7g) of Cascade (5.9%) boiled for 5 minutes.
2 oz. (56.7g) of Centennial (8.6%) boiled for 0 minutes.

We tried the beer on yesterday's show and we clearly all loved it. It was much drier than I expected given the crystal/carapils and lighter in color than I expected given the pound of chocolate malt. Did you use 350L/400L Chocolate malt? I see that JP has the recipe configured as Pale Chocolate. Is that another irrational recipe change by JP or did you as well use Pale Chocolate?

In any case, great beer and fantastic attenuation.

Hey Tasty,

Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad you liked it! I fell asleep during the show and woke up at the end when you were talking about the Buzz and the Bodacious Brown Ale recipe kit at MoreBeer. The Sunday shows run late on the east coast!

I used Briess Chocolate Malt at 350 L. I told JP I thought the pale chocolate would be too light, Amber instead of Brown. My original recipe was very similar to Janet's Brown Ale, but was lower in OG (1.058 vs 1.066) and IBU (41 vs 63) and I did not dry hop. I'm not sure why it dried out so much, cause it mashed at 154-158. I had a hard time controlling the mash temp on that first batch, but I nailed down the procedure by the third batch on the Brew Sculpture.

I made two versions of Bodacious Brown Ale - the one you had was Cal Ale Yeast and the other was Irish Ale Yeast. The Cal Ale was hoppier, clean and crisp and the Irish Ale was maltier and sweeter. It is interesting how much flavor comes from the yeast and fermentation.

Bodacious is a word for big, bold, smooth, round, silky, fullness. Ummhhh, Bodacious Brown Ale!
