Zythos hops

Sat Dec 08, 2012 10:03 am

Anybody have much experience with these?
Im making a pale ale, today with #6 2 row, #4 Maris otter, with Amarillo and Zythos.
I think im going to bitter with the zythos and use the amarillo and whats left of the zythos at the end of the boil.
Any input or suggestions on hop scheduling?
Ive only used amarillo a few times and Ive never used zythos.

I have not used them, but just got a pound of them, so please update with your results.

All I'm seeing is that it's not a hop variety, but a blend. A bunch of the C-hops with the blend aimed towards IPA's. I would imagine you could do a damned fine SMaSH with them.

And Adam, they're not good for anything. You can drop that pound off over here any time before 6 for appropriate disposal.

I have used them and enjoyed them in some IPA batches I have done at home. They have been paired up with centennial and cascade with generous 10 min and under additions and a 6oz per 5 gallon batch dry hop.

Heres what I came up with.
Making a pale ale and using 001
#7.5 2 row
#4 Maris Otter
4 oz. C60

.75 zythos 10.9% @60
.5 amarillo 9.3% @30
.25 zythose @ FO
.5 amarillo @2 FO
6.5 gallon batch

Measured OG 1.049
Wort tasted real nice!
Probably dry hop it with a half ounce of each, too.

i love zythos. used it in 2 APAs paired with citra in one and falconer's in the other. definitely preferred it with citra, dry hopped with 2oz of each with 2oz of each in the last 15m of the boil as well.

I found them ho hum in a hop bursted amber ale, but excellent in Kris Englands Crouch Vale Summer bitter recipe with nothing more than UK Pils, wyeast 1469 and a massive charge of Zythos only at 15 min. Killer beer.

Anyway, to kill off my pound, I just used 3-4 ounces in a hoppy table strength saison with the new danstar dry belle saison yeast. Another poster over at HBT thought Zythos (with its lemony herbal character) would work well in a saison. We'll see.
