I have been going back and forth on purchasing a Bottling Wand. One of those fandangled $100.00 Catch me kiss me jobs. Well, I just bottled a 6 pack of Belgian Golden strong from the tap of my kegerator. I squirted a touch of CO into the bottle, then filled the bottles at 3 PSI. Grabbed a cap from the Star Sans Bath, and Voila! Now, in 4 weeks, I drink one to check for oxidization. Then another in another 4 weeks. Let's hope this works.

I wanted to try this approach.

As a side note, I Carbonated the beer prior to this little journey. And yes, I have had a few of them also :drink 8.4% Beer on tap... Seriously though, I want this to work out as I have a Keg of RIS on hand that has been in the Keg now for a little over 5 months. I want to Bottle it because it's not every day that you want a RIS for a beer. Plus, it should age very, very well. :aaron

MUNCHER!!! I knew I liked you for a reason. Now I am a little worried about the amount of foam I had in my bottles. But hey, it's only a 6 pack and I look forward to tasting what oxidization tastes like. :pop

Anything I can do to help....

I've never kegged but in my kegging research, I came across that little technique and thought I'd bookmark it for future reference.

Just a thought: I was listening to an archive with Dan Gordon yesterday and he says they "cap on foam" because it reduces oxidation. Is what you did any different?

Oh...I hope you didn't think I was BierMuncher. I'm nowhere near that guy's level.

Is that Golden Strong highly carbonated (like 4 volumes) or is it at the same 2.5volumes as most beers? I ask because while I've been able to fill normally carbonated bottles with an open system like you describe, I've had no luck with fizzier styles.

Lowering the pressure in the keg from 20psi to 5psi just seems to start the bubbles coming out while the beer is still in the lines and keg. If I pressurize the bottle before letting the beer flow and keep the keg at its natural pressure, it seems to work better for me, except the stopper is kind of hard to hold in.
