I just happened to be surfing Williams Brewing website and found this new electric brew water heater. Seems really cool. I know there are DIY versions, but this would be great to setup a timer and ranco to this so I can set it to have my sparge water at temp on brew day.

$180 is a bunch of change for that. I use a homemade heatstick http://www.cedarcreeknetworks.com/heatstick.htm plugged into an appliance timer so I can have my water ready to dough in when I get up in the morning. It would be easy to also plug into the Ranco unit to control the temperature. All or a lot less money.

If you don't want to build your own, and don't want to spend more than $100, look for a water bucket heater from a farm and ranch supply. Here's one for $30:

If I had know about that sooner, I probably wouldn't have made my own electric HLT. I went through more than one heating element trying to tap it for a ground screw. I might have spent $30, and I certainly spent $30 worth of time.

Oh, and that William's thing probably wouldn't work for me. Most of my circuits are 15 amp.
