Digital Thermometer?

Does anyone know if one of these digital meat thermometers would work in a kettle/mash tun/HLT? would be great to throw it in and then come back when everything is at the right temps.

mine sucked I think you need a glove or a rubber type thing for the probe

They work great for one or two brews, until the water makes its way down inside it and it craps out. It might eventually dry out and work again (mine did). I think it would be beneficial to put 6" of heat shrink tubing where the wire braid meets the probe, to delay the effect.

I put a little RTV silicone (Like you would use on your differential cover) where the probe meets the wire and then shrink tubed the whole wire, and it hasn't failed since. I think I picked that trick up from Beer_Bear. Anyway, works like a charm.

I tried one out today. I just couldn't seem to postion it right in the pot; and, so, I couldn't get an accurate reading.

Let me know if you figure out a good way to get the tip of it in the right place (in the very center of the liquid).

I'm all about kicking back on the couch until I hear a little beep, of course.

In principle, it should work.

I borrowed (took) my wifes $50 one and it worked great...worked...as in past tense. I got water in it and it kept reading 140 degrees.

Yep, mine crapped out after 3-4 brews. I like the silicone / shrink wrap idea...
