Beer spraying from Corny "Out"

Excited to bottle some of a recent brew, I removed my quick disconnect on the corny so I could hook up the beer gun.

Beer started spraying like mad out the valve. I released all the pressure from the keg and it stopped. But I've never had to do this on other kegs.

FYI, these are used kegs, part of the 4 pack special NB was recently running. My out valve is plenty tight, perhaps the poppet valve is failing? Anyone had this happen before?

Sounds like you have a bad poppet valve - the little spring loaded valve in the center of the post. They have replacements at your LHBS. Make sure you tell them who the manufacturer of your keg is (it might be a corny style - but not make by Cornelius).

Yep, the joys of buying used kegs! The replacements are only a couple bucks.

the last time this happened to me, it was a keg i had dry hopped and there was a little piece of hop matter that got pulled up through the dip tube and was screwing up the valve. maybe it just needs cleaned. just a thought.

Steeler's right. It probably just got stuck open a little.
This can also happen on the gas-in side, turning it into a gas-out :(

Sometimes all it takes is to fiddle with the center poppet a little with your fingernail or something sharp enough to move it around a little.

[edit] oh, and of course, this thread happens to be listed right above the other, ahem, "corny" thread, I thought this might be really nasty....

I think you might convince JP to have a beer enema....

Your post may not be tightend all of the way too. I've had that problem before.

I think it's a case of the poppet valve not "popping" back into place correctly.

I carbonated the beer with no problems. I only noticed the issue when I removed a quick disconnect to hook up the Beer Gun. Makes me think the poppet valve didn't spring back into the correct position.

Thanks for all the feedback!
