So was planning on using my new march pump. Tried to wire it up, but something was wrong in my wiring. So decided just to wire it straight to a plug in cord and bypass the switch. When I turned it on, it makes this awful whining noise, then hits a high pitch squeal. Is this normal or do I have a defective pump?

Put some fluid through that pump.... Dey ain't designed to be run dry... In other words (besides the obviously dangerous bare wiring) - your fine. I hope you have that plugged into a GFCI outlet, at least... Otherwise, we might have fried Crut for New Year's dinner. At least there will be extra room on the short bus for me.

the bare wires were just for testing it and will be wire nutted together. Yeah its plugged it to the garage wiring with the breaker box. It kept popping the breaker if tried to rig with the switch. I need to get my wiring friend over to set it up properly i guess. i thought I knew what i was doing, but guess not. I will try running just some straight water through it after brewing and use it next time. My brew days arent going as wll as ive been hoping. more later in the rant section.

Don't run your pump dry! You WILL hurt it. Ask me how I know... And if you need to know where to get replacement March pump parts I know the place

I hooked it up to the leftover boil water, couldnt figure out why it wouldnt pump out. Doh wrong end, switch input/output and tadaa it pumps, imagine that. The hi-pitch scream is gone, musta been pump head. No just gotta get the whole switch thing figured out. I plan to have the switch in a double elect box, and have two plug in as well for other misc electronics. My buddy is really good with wiring, so I'll get him over to right it.

I thought those things were designed to be run horizontal rather than the vertical alignment you have. My first thought was that the screech was the bearings getting loads they were not designed to get. Noise went away though, so I guess that is not it.

Anyway, might want to turn it 90 degrees to extent the motor's life.

Yep, those bearings aren't designed to support the weight of the pump that way. The motor needs to be horizontal. If you need to change the orientation of the inlet and outlet, just take the mounting screws out and rotate the pump head 90°.

Thanks Guys, ill probably work on it this week with the wiring included. My valve that i had on ity leaked, so it was all or nothing. But i used it for chilling through my CFC, no problems other than a small leak in my CFC end. Glad this brew day is done. Pitched about half hour ago. Grav was a little higher, and final vol was a little lower, my boil must have been a little too high from my recipe. But oh well, i think it will turn out to be a damn nice IPA.
