I just ordered a barley crusher from Northern Brewer. Man, I can't wait till my next brew day! Now, I need to shop for bulk grain.

Congrats! You won't regret the jump. You will wonder why you ever messed with pre-crushed grains.

After years of dealing with crappy efficiencies from store bought crushes, I'm amazed with the gravity increase from grinding my own malt.
I too bought the barley crusher and on its factory setting, I get a good amount of flour and have to recirc a little more, but my efficiency went up significantly.
I brewed a German pils and I expected a 1.055 OG based on my previous calculations. I ended up with an OG of 1.072! Good news is, I have a Maibock I didn't plan on brewing.
Good luck!

You guys are crazy with your "grain mills". All you need is a rolling pin and a Walmart bag.
Quick, who thinks I am serious?

make sure you hook it up to an electric motor and spin it at 200 r.p.m.. you will get a better crush than if you do it with a hand crank.

Man your hi-tech, i did a partial-mash where i crushed the grains between two cast iron frypans. Worked good, but time consuming!

Youuuuuu were lucky!!!
i had to throw to grain into the air, and rely on gravity to do the crushing on impact. In the middle of winter, while my father beat me to death with his belt!!!

The Finn, take advantage of the dollar and order a barley crusher from the states. Even with shipping it ends up pretty darn cheap. Thats what I did. Hell, I even ordered my 10 gallon Mega pot from Northern brewer. Even with shipping to Belgium it was cheaper than what I can get at my lhbs (Brouwland). The dollar just hit an all time low against the euro yesterday. It also sucks for me though, I just wired over the last of my money in the US to help pay for my house here. Man, that hurt.
