Does nobody in the US use the plastic drum type fermentors?? like this one

They are probably the most common type of fermentor used in Australia. Everyone from beginning Kit and Kilo brewers to award winning AG types.

Of course, some people use carboys, buckets or conicals, but as far as I am aware most of us are using the drums.

They seal airtight via a screw down lid with an O'ring, they have a spigot (removable) in the bottom, you can get em anywhere from 12 to 80litres in capacity, they're light, have handles, they dont break, they are mostly see through, I've never had to clean mine with anything more abrasive than a dishcloth, in a pinch you can transfer via CO2 pressure and they are less than half the price of a carboy.

Not done in the US??

I think this came up on the NB forum a month or so back. Some people were getting similar vessels from pet supply stores. I'll see if I can find the topic again and post a link tomorrow.

Any science/lab supplier have them. Here is a link to my favorite lab supplier. http://www.cynmar.com/SearchByKeyword.aspx?word=Carboy

So what makes that any better than a regular bucket? A screw on lid? OK I guess. I still would have to split my batches in two. As a ten gallon brewer I am more concerned with fermenting in one container. It seems my only option is a conical.

Thirsty Boy says they go up to 80L, which is 21 gallons. Not sure where to find them that large though. The above referenced sites seem to only go up to 5G. But I'm sure if you search enough, you'll find it.
