I do not have a water filtration system at home other than a Brita water pitcher. I currently brew with water from my kitchen sink transferred to my garage in very small increments with no filtering/treatment at all.

Would using this drinking water hose from an outside spigot be any more subject to off flavors than my current method? My thought is that it probably would, but it just seems like sooooooo much less of a pain in the ass that I hope it would be OK!!

I use an "RV potable water hose" from Wal-Mart similar to this one with no problems at all. Even though everything is cleaned AFTER use, I typically wash equipment before I use it too, so there's plenty of water that goes through the hose before I fill my HLT.

After I'm done I drain it thoroughly before storage just to help keep bacteria & mold away.

I think it'll work just fine.

Thanks so much for the info! This will greatly reduce lots of pain-in-the-ass steps on brew day!

I have only brewed 2 batches of beer full boil, and I use my standard garden hose to fill my kettle. I let it run for a minute or two to run out anything that might have made a home in the hose. I add the water to a measuring bucket, and if it looks okay with nothing floating in it I just dump it into the kettle. My beer has tasted fine, and I did not notice any difference. This would be the only step that i have over looked for sanitizing, but I figured since the water would be boiling it would take care of any living micro organisms that would add off flavor. Maybe I am wrong, but I also brew with regular tap water. Again, it is beer for me and friends. It's not like I am going to competition or anything. Maybe I should invest in a new garden hose, and keep it put up after each use.

If I understand correctly, its not fully the microorganisms in the hose water but the plastics ( polyphenols?) that are of concern in garden hoses. They will give your beer that "hose water" flavor.

I understand...but you see it is a rather old and well seasoned garden hose with some exposure! LOL I know what your talking about especially when you buy a new hose and can smell that plastic PVC smell....hell just walk down the isle at HD, or Lowes and you can smell it like some serious "BO"

Just buy the potable water hose made for RVs.
