Motorizing a malt mill

Hand grinding 16 pounds of malt for a barleywine finally convinced me to get off my ass and get this project completed.

I used a 1/4hp 1625 rpm motor, and with sheaves purchased from McMaster Carr I was able to reduce it to 170 rpm's. I used a central AC/heat register vent adapter to create a shoot under the mill. II'm in the process of making a sheet metal safety shied to cover the drive belt and sheaves.

-motor $89.00
-mill $129.00
-lumber $7.00
-large sheave $17.00
-small sheave $2.00
-drive belt $5.00
-extention cord for power cord $4.00
-light switch $1.50
- switch box and cover plate $1.00
- couple cans of primer and spray paint $6.00

TOTAL - $254.00

Nice job :)

I got the same mill and may want to do motorize it as well eventually. This definately helps in figuring out the cost and what to use.

(Straight out of Lunch Meat...) You could put a slip cover on the bucket, get a matching cord, and clean up the drill to make it all spiffy again!

Sounds like Bub has motor envy.
