Aquarium Pump

Anyone else using an aquarium pump to aerate the wort? I tried it on my last batch of beer and that bastard foamed like crazy out the top of the carboy... If I choose to comtinue that is it better to do so in the boil pot (after immersion chiller) then transfer to the carboy? I have air filters in line from the pump then to aeration stones for oxidation - before I get slammed for not using bottled O2.

Better make sure you have the langstrom set correctly or those wimpy filters wont do shit. J/k I need to get off my wallet and get some inline sanitary filters too.

It shouldn't make a difference. whatever is easier for you.

I do it in the carboy since I try keep the pot covered as much as I can during and after chilling the wort. When I then oxygenate in the carboy I have a much smaller opening and can visially check if I get O2 (or air in your case) out of the stone.

Try some foam control and do it in your carboy... less likely to stir up shit and may get a cleaner beer because of it.

can´t remember how long you keep your aquarium pump going on on the carboy. Does anyone know how long it takes for a good aeration???

I kept 30 min. on each carboy of my weizen. Is that good?

Also, is there a problem to aerate after pitching?

You will only have a problem if you aerate after fermentation has begun. Or on the hot side. But once cooled, you are good. Some people even aerate a couple of times before fermentation has started. But uh.....I don't know much about that.

And as for pure O2, I've heard stories of oxidation. Even Palmer doesn't give pure O2 the thumbs up. The choice is yours brother. I'm a fish pump, hepa filter, ss stone, kind of guy.

ok, I used a hepa filter and a difusion stone, and I didn´t see any air comming out of it.

So I took the filter out and used only the stone....and again, it didn´t had any air comming out of it (apparentely at least, cause I got pretty close to it and cound´t feel anything)....

only with a hose, it was pretty clear there was air blowed in the carboy......

But then I was afraid of contamination....can anybody help me?? What is this?

Sounds like your stone is clogged. The holes in those things are so small the oil from your fingers can clog them. I think if that happens you can boil it in water for a few minutes and it will open it back up.
