concial temp control

Sun Jul 10, 2011 3:55 pm

How would you control the ferm temp on a conical like a 14-15 gal size other than controlling the temp in the room? I know the ultimate conical has the ability to heat and cool but what about the fermanator or like the mini-brew conicals? any suggestions or ideas would be awesome. Prost!

Like this:

I built a dolly to roll the filled 14 gal Fermenator from the garage to the basement and a hoist/trolley system to lift it, roll it over the chest freezer and down inside.
The bitch of the big conicals is there weight when full.
Good luck! :jnj

So there pretty much isnt any other economically feasable way to cool or heat one other than in a fridge or freezer of some sort or making a cold room

There is also a glycol setup for cooling similar to what professionals use, though not cheap. Though with that you could heat and cool the with one system.
On tap: dunkelwiessen, american brown ale
Fermenting: american barleywine
On deck: ? what ever is next

If you have a dedicated faucet and cool groundwater, I know a guy who put a solenoid valve on a sink faucet and a temp controller. He then wrapped his carboys with copper tubing. Whenever they got too warm, he just let the sink run. Works very well in NYC where you don't pay water bills.

My plan is to use a couple of peltiers bonded to aluminum plates much larger than the peltiers. Maybe 4" square by half inch thick each .
Machine (abrasive paper double sticky tape to the conical after getting it most the way there with files - really ) the plates to conform exactly to the conical body and use thermal adhesive paste to effect the final bond and then clamp it with big steel band clamps.

Then drill a hole in my Blichmann and put a thermowell inside next to the O2 injector

I has cast about trying to figure a way to use PWM tech to ramp the peltiers up and down so that the shut off does not simply let the hot ( or cold) side re-transfer its left over thermal quantum back to the fermenter but, after much consideratrion - - I don't think it much matters.
HEY~!! It's a hobby~!! It's NOT supposed to make sense~!!
