Apartment Brewing?

Wed May 25, 2011 10:49 am

The house I've been renting has been sold. I'm probably going to wind up in an apartment with an electric range and no yard for outdoor brewing. Can I safely use a propane burner indoors? Should I just start making 2 gallon batches until I can find a better place to brew instead?

You could allways try getting a Bucket heater like this to supplement the stoves boiling power. http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/public ... R7_XFgvMFg

 Uh ... hell no! Plus, I'm sure your land lord will be less than thrilled

I suggest:

use two 2.5 gallon pots on your stove, spitting your ingredients, then place them in the sink to cool (I have a double sink), else you can put one in teh kitchen sink and on ein the bath tub. Then dump them both in your 5 gallon bucket, add the needed water to bring you to 5 gallons (I boil some the night before and after its colled put it in the fridge). This will help cool down your wort. Then place your bucket on the flor and rock it hard for a minute. Even in an apartmnet, you can handle 5 gallons.
But not a big 5 gallon stock pot, unless you have some super fancy stove.

Agreed. Propane burners indoors are just asking for trouble. I use an electric stove, and keep my batches to less than 3 gallons of liquid, because the stove has a hard time keeping that much liquid hot, and you don't want the electric element on full blast for that long. It increases the likelihood of scorching. The split batch idea is a good one, or you can do a concentrated boil with top up water.

No dice on the burner inside. Have you looked or decided on a new place. Should be plenty apts. around there with gas stoves and some sort of yard. You could always cruise over and brew up a batch!

I really want to get out to Alex and brew with you, sno. I'm just a brewing baby, and could use any advice/experience that I can get. Let's set something up like a month or two out so I can make sure my schedule is clear...

Of course you can.
Apartments and houses have propane range tops and ovens don't they?
Provide for some ventilation. A cheap $14.00 LASKO window box fan in the window sucking the carbon monoxide out will serve.
The only issues you have other than that are the spill & fire hazards of indoor brewing, both are problems you can solve. Of course your brewery will take over substantial apartment real estate.
