False Bottom comparison advice - Slotted vs Perforated

Thu Apr 21, 2011 7:03 am

I'm going to buy a 10 Gallon Mash tun with a false bottom today, I need a little quick advice from the experienced.

More Beer's has a 9" domed perforated one seen here:

Adventures in homebrew has a slotted domed (although I'm not really seeing the dome at all) here:

http://www.homebrewing.org/9-Stainless-Steel-Domed-False-Bottom_p_1011.html

Price difference for the total mash tun is negligible, morebeers is a few dollars less.

My concern is that the perforated false bottom could possibly have channeling with holes being so close to the edge. This is only based on things I've interpreted while reading, I am looking for a more experienced hand to weigh in.

I would appreciate it if someone could let me know whether my concerns are legit or overly critical.

Thanks in advance,

J

I believe the 9" is designed for a 5 gal cooler.

Yah, thats what I thought too, but both places give a 9" with their 10 gallon coolers.

EDIT: Correction, upon further review, it looks like a 12" comes with the adventures in brewing one:

This is the morebeer, says it comes with 9", not sure what to make of that given the dimensions:

For 10 gallon round beverage containers or larger, like our Rubbermaid coolers.

I'm partial to perforated, and would want more open area than that slotted thing has. But I can't back up my feelings with any scientific data. Sometime grain gets stuck in the holes of my perforated false bottom requiring slightly more effort to poke out when cleaning. I suppose that can happen with those slots too. Pictures of my cooler with perforated false bottom here.
Aging: Gotlandsdrickå, Baltic Porter in Bourbon barrel, Olde Ale #2 in whiskey barrel
On Draft: Nothing. Building a walk-in cooler right now.
