I have been doing 5-gallon All Grain batches on the stove for a few months now. I saw a turkey fryer at the Target store and I knew would see it on the sale rack if no one bought it for Thanksgiving or Christmas. I saw it yesterday marked down to $40. It came with a long probe thermometer and 30 quart aluminum pot with lid. Now I need a cooler mashtun and a 15 gallon pot and I can make 10 gallons at a time!

Nice find. I'd check that thermometer against ice cold water or a known accurate thermometer; the one that came with my turkey fryer kit was 10-15ºF off depending on the temp. range it was being used in. Basically useless.

I fired it up as soon as I got it home to burn the paint off and build up a layer of oxidation on the aluminum pot, and I tested the thermometer when it started boiling - it read 212F / 100C so I think the thermometer is pretty accurate. I had a thermometer that was reading 10 degrees too low and I think I mashed a few batches at around 160 thinking I was at 150. Super malty beers, and quick to ferment too!
